Contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama is known for her love of color and especially dots. Her Obliteration Rooms have viewers “obliterating” gallery spaces with dot stickers, and the artist herself is often pictured wearing some sort of dotted attire. So, it’s only fitting that her incredible creativity would inspire makers around the world. The Dot Kokeshi doll by Sketch.inc features a figure clad in color with an outfit to match the name. And just like Kusama, who is continually reinventing otherwise ordinary spaces, Kemp has reimagined the traditional Kokeshi doll. The wooden figurines tie back to Japan’s Edo period and are associated with gestures of friendships. So, how will you help define this new type of Kokeshi?

About Sketch.inc
Sketch.inc is the creative studio of Becky Kemp, an artist based in South London. She started her career as an art teacher but branched out on her own in 2011 to start her commercial practice. Now, her work is inspired by a "love of Nordic design and Japanese illustration"—traits found on her beloved Kokeshi dolls.
